Comfort Station Now Open

The City and County has completed the construction of public restrooms located near the jungle gym and tennis courts. Please make sure that someone is watching your dog when you are using the facilities.

Tips For Summer

Summer is almost here. As the heat increases, so does your dog's chances of developing heatstroke.

  • Never leave your dog in a parked car, even with the windows cracked.
  • Watch for signs of distress, such as heavy panting, difficulty in breathing, excessive salivation, sluggishness or disorientation, or an increased heart rate. Dogs with small snouts (such as pugs and bulldogs) are particularly susceptible to heatstroke.
  • Make sure your dog has plenty of cool water to drink, particlarly if he or she is playing in the hot sun. The water fountain at the park is located near the front entrance.
  • If you suspect heatstroke, move the dog to a cool area and spray the animal with cold water or use cold compresses to reduce the body temperature. Check for signs of shock.
  • When in doubt, take your dog to a veterinarian immediately.

Pick Up Your Dog's Poop!

There seems to be an increase in the amount of unclaimed poop at the park. This increases the number of flies and the chance of disease transmission. Please keep an eye on your dog at all times. If someone else's dog is pooping, let them know! You can also be a good samaritan and pick up any unclaimed poop you see.

The Moanalua Dog Park Thanks Everyone for Making its Grand Opening a Big Success!
At the Grand Opening ceremonies, City and State officials recognized the involvement of community members who helped establish the Moanalua Dog Park. MGCA members Ron Jones, Ken Hagino, Clayton & Betty Kamida are shown holding Certificates of Recognition from Senator Norman Sakamoto.

The Moanalua Dog Park Grand Opening took place on April 17, 2004, and thanks to all our volunteers, participating organizations, and donors, it was a big success! We were blessed with very light showers---a true “Hawaiian blessing.” With everyone doing their individual parts, everything went very smoothly.

In the true sense of community, people of all ages and backgrounds worked together to create a truly “Grand” Opening. From the Ohana Cadette Girl Scout Troop #75 acting as greeters and distributing take home “doggie bags,” to the Moanalua Gardens Seniors Club providing leis and parking attendants, the guests were treated with aloha from beginning to end. (Please see the event program which lists all the honorees, donors, participating organizations, and volunteers.)

At the information tables, we had dogs who help people (Hawaii Fi-Do Service Dogs and the Human-Animal Bond Program pet therapy dogs), and people who help dogs (Animal CARE Foundation, dogtok.com, Hawaii Dog Foundation, Hawaiian Humane Society). Mahalo to all these groups not only for taking part in the Grand Opening, but also for your ongoing efforts in promoting and strengthening the unique bond between humans and dogs.

We tried to thank everyone who helped, either in the program, in person, or via email. If we somehow missed you, however, please forgive us. We greatly appreciated every contribution and offer of help that made the Grand Opening a success!
